Prince Michael is the younger brother of the Duke of Kent. He is a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, and the second son of Prince George who was the fourth son of King George V.

He was born in 1942 and educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. After a 20-year military career, he is now an officer in the naval reserve.

His maternal grandmother was a cousin of Tzar Nicholas II of Russia and he has a particular interest in Russian affairs, serving as patron of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce. He is a qualified Russian interpreter and also speaks fluent French. It has been remarked on his visits to Russia how much he looks like Tsar Nicholas.

In 1978 he married Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz. Since she is a Catholic he gave up his right to succession of the throne. They have two children, Lord Frederick Windsor, born in 1979; and Lady Gabriella Windsor, born in 1981.
