Edmund became joint ruler in 1094 with his uncle Donald III (Donald Bane) after Donald regained the throne on the death of his nephew Duncan II. Edmund ruled South of the Forth, and Donald the North.

He and Duncan were deposed by Edmund’s brother Edgar in 1097. Duncan was imprisoned, and Edmund fled to England where he became a monk at Montecute Abbey, Somerset, where he died later. The date of his death is unknown.
